Lady Gaga just called to say she's AWESOME

Just when you think Gaga's going to have a tough job outdoing her Bad Romance video. Like Idolator said, "Lady Gaga just called to say she's AWESOME."

Check out her new video, "Telephone." Love!

Art, a thing of beauty

I'm the last person to claim to know much about art of design, especially considering I can't draw to save my life. But I've always liked pretty things and I pride myself for having an eye for quirky and beautiful pieces. In the traditional sense of art though, I've always been drawn to installations, actual 3D pieces of work instead of something on canvas (for the record, there are some illustrators that do gorgeous work and I had the lucky opportunity to work with them recently for ABSOLUT), and it's even stronger when the work makes a statement.

The reason I started this post was because I wanted to highlight Phillip Toledano, a socio-political artist whom I only recently found out about after seeing his work "America The Gift Shop" at Singapore's Fringe Festival. I wouldn't call his work "quiet" but it surprisingly makes the statement he wants to make without shouting at you - and in my opinion, that is the best way to send a message across.

Check out his portfolio here: http://www.mrtoledano.com/

Boyzone's latest single a tribute to Stephen Gately

Watching this at work and I'm tearing up. If I had one regret, it would be that I've never been to a Boyzone concert before and it'll never be the same again. Sigh. Their new album "Brother" will be out in 8 March 2010!

If you're wondering where all the black and white intercut scenes are from, check out "Back Again...No Matter What: Live 2008" - it's a two-disc DVD with scenes from their 2008 concert (I can't stand the word "comeback" because to me, they never left) on one disc and a documentary on the other disc following the boys' first meeting after almost 8 years of not seeing each other and them getting back in shape for their first tour as the reunited Boyzone. It's a bittersweet piece, especially with Stephen's passing. Stephen's rendition of Bright Eyes is a complete tearjerker - hello, try holding back tears with Stephen singing, "Bright eyes, burning like fire, how can the light that burned so brightly suddenly burn so pale?"

I Heart Boyzone

LOL - if you're a true Boyzone fan, this won't be the first time you've seen this absolutely embarassing clip. Here's the kicker though, the boys re-enacting the entire scene from their first TV appearance on some Dublin TV show.

For more embarassing goodness, check out the "almost" full-length clip here:

You Know Me by Robbie Williams

Ahh, Robbie's gone and done it again! Was listening to his new album "Reality Killed The Video Star" and was completely oblivious to the fact that "You Know Me" was his new single after "Bodies!" Had posted a comment on how much I love retro feel of the song on Facebook and a fellow fan told me that she loved the video. And I was like, "What video?!" Yes, I'm completely ashamed to call myself a fan. Sigh. Work tends to get into way of play - damn it.

Anyhoo - here's Robbie in all his quirky, campy glory. Love the doo-wop cabbage heads. If the tune sounds familiar, Robbie borrows part of the tune from French singer Francoise Hardy's Voilà, listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFIUe9hFda0

PS: Ignore the first 30 seconds this YouTube version of "You Know Me" as it's just an ad. It's the only version that I could find that wasn't on fast forward. Hope it stays on!

Gaga-licious!

Ahh, going gaga over Gaga in her new video Bad Romance. The Lady is looking abfab gorgeous in her new video, those lovely, lovely eyes! What's not to love - super catchy beats/lyrics, Wade Robson-esque dance moves, maxed out glam outfits (yes, that IS a polar bear rug coat!) and a good round of spot the product placements! And come on, the black crown that Lady Gaga is wearing is totally screaming Max from Where The Wild Things Are. And did Madam Gaga turn the creepy hairless cat into a hair clip at the end [3:02]? Fans of Gaga's boobie sparklers shooter from the Much Music Video Awards will be glad to know that they make a re-appearance in this video. I can literally hear drag queens around the world dropping Madonna's JPG cone bras to the floor.

Sing it with me now! “Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah-ah! Roma-roma-mamaa! Ga-ga-ooh-la-la!”

So here's what I spotted in my first viewing of the video, in order or appearance:
  • 0:11 Parrot by Starck - iPhone/iPod speakers
  • 0:17 Nemiroff vodka - didn't like the opening shot of the bottles at all, hard sell. Bleurgh.
  • 2:02 Burberry trench
  • 2:11 Nintendo wii controller and 2:45 HP laptops me thinks. If you're wondering what they're for, I think it's the bidding button of our Lady, bids going up are shown on the HP laptops.
  • 3:28 Craaaaazeee gold outfit and un-missable heels from Alexander McQueen. I have no clue how anyone walks in those (apparently Daphne Guinness is doing a helluva a job though - just google "Daphne Guinness McQueen", but I would love to try! Muahaha, sometimes, I think I have a miniature drag queen inside of me who's screaming to escape.
  • 3:47 Carrera sunglasses
There's a lot of product placement easter eggs in the video, see if you can spot more. Give up?

Andy Warhol of our times, anyone?

Cocktails on Mad Men

Cocktails are as much a character on the Emmy-winning series “Mad Men” as Don Draper and his Sterling Cooper colleagues. Deals have been made and broken, relationships born and killed and creative minds put to the test over a Bloody Mary or Old-Fashioned.

We take a look at the classic cocktails that are the drinks of choice among the “Mad Men” set as the hit show's third season comes to an end Sunday. Sit back, have a drink and take a trip back to a time when pregnancy and business hours didn't mean cocktails were off-limits.

Old-Fashioned

Who's had it: Draper's drink of choice — we knew this bourbon-based libation was his preference before we even knew his name — is among six cocktails that date back to the 1800s. Local bartenders say they get a few requests for this fruity, slightly bitter cocktail, mostly from businessmen wanting to unwind.

“It's a sipping drink,” explains Jesse Pantoja, a local bartender and manager with more than nine years experience.

Where to get it: Most bars, especially those catering to the executive crowd. Try Morton's the Steakhouse.

Classic martini

Who's had it: Roger Sterling favors this vodka-based classic whether he's at lunch commiserating with colleagues or trying to get through dinner with family. He's even shared a few with Don (remember the oysters and martinis lunch from season one?). Whether ordered with extra vermouth, no vermouth or a touch of olive juice, “martinis are made to be crisp,” says Stephen Drew, assistant director, food and beverage, of Bar Rojo at the Grand Hyatt.

Where to get it: Almost any place that serves liquor and has a bar stool. For a retro touch, try the martini lunch special at Oro Restaurant & Bar at the Emily Morgan Hotel.

Bloody Mary

Who's had it: Known as a hangover cure and brunch-time beverage, Duck Phillips tried to woo Sterling Cooper copywriter Peggy Olsen with this vodka/tomato mixture with a kick. He succeeded, but not in the way we expected. From the 1960s to today, this cocktail has never seemed to wane in popularity.

“We get quite a few orders for it, especially on Sunday mornings,” says Pantoja, who manages the bar at Tomatillo's Café y Cantina.

Where to get it: If establishments that serve Tex-Mex and breakfast offer this drink, then you can get it pretty much anywhere.

Tom Collins

Who's had it: Little Sally Draper has proven her bartending skills making this gin-based libation that shares a spot with the Old-Fashioned and martini among the six original cocktails. (The Manhattan, Daiquiri and Sidecar are the others.)

Though not among the most popular cocktails, local bartenders say they still get requests for this classic, mostly from older patrons. Maybe they're reliving their own “Mad Men” days.

Where to get it: Your best bet is at swanky bars frequented by business executives. Try Vbar at Hotel Valencia.

Vodka gimlet

Who's had it: When Betty Draper was torn on whether to take back Don at the end of season two, she went into a Manhattan bar and ordered this tangy cocktail. Its effects were a bit surprising.

Men and women of all ages enjoy this easy-to-make cocktail, say local bar keeps.

Where to get it: A bar wouldn't be a bar without the ingredients for this libation. All you need is vodka and a touch of lime.

My boys are back!

My boy Robbie Williams is back! Wooho! Can't wait for his new album Reality Killed the Video Star, which drops November 9. If his new single "Bodies" is anything to go by, it's going to be a helluva good ride for Robbie - he's definitely got his swing back. And his always loyal, loving fans (yay me) are welcoming him back with wide, open arms, even if he's in a long-term relationship with girlfriend Ayda Field (pronounced Ida).

And if you need more proof that Robbie belongs on the live stage - check out his crazy amazing performance of Bodies at BBC's Electric Proms

And because I'm lazy, I'm tossing in Adam Lambert's first single post American Idol, "Time for Miracles." I hate to say this, but Adam's hair is all wrong in the video - makes his face look fat! The stylist/director/whoever's in charge of Adam's look in the video needs to get their ass over to the DETAILS office and get some tips, coz Glambert is looking H-O-T on the cover of this month's DETAILS. And even better in the sexy black and white spread inside the magazine. Hint: There's Adam, and there's a naked woman.

Goodnight Stephen, you made things better.

It was four hours ago when I first found out about the news, and my first thought was - this can't be true, it must be another cruel hoax, especially considering that most sites that carried the news have been quoting News of the World. As I maniacally did a search for more credible sources - the band's official web site, BBC, etc - I kept muttering to myself, "this can't be true, no, can't be, he's so young." I just had to let the news sink in: Stephen Gately, at 33, had died in his sleep while vacationing in Majorca, Spain. And then it hit me: I've never had the chance to see Boyzone in concert. Ever. I'm still reeling from the shock and I know that to many people, Stephen Gately was just another boyband member, and one who came out about his sexuality.

But Boyzone has always had a special place in my heart, even after all these years. And just like how people argued over whether John or Paul was better, the same can be said for Ronan and Stephen, but Boyzone being Boyzone, it was never really about who was better. It was about making good music - songs that were about more than just falling in love with girls or heartbreak. In all their songs, there was always a sense of humility and maturity. Just take a look at the video for "Better" (above) -- how many mainstream boybands would openly embrace same-sex relationships? Sure, I'm not ashamed to say that I had my girly teenage crush moments screaming at the screen when Stephen appeared in the "Key To My Life" video but at the same time, "Arms of Mary," "I'm Learning" and "Where Did You Go" probably unknowingly shaped my concept of what love means. And until today, "She Moved Through The Fair" still gives me shivers.

For the record, I actually bought Stephen's "New Beginning" album. Don't know what I'm talking about? See videos here: New Beginning, I Believe, Stay. For a cheeky side of see Stephen performing Beyonce's "Single Ladies" live in Wembley in 2009.

Stephen just oozed an easy charm that came so naturally, and the fact that he always seemed to shy away from interviews when he was in Boyzone just made him more adorable. You always knew when it was Stephen singing, sweet, beautiful and innocent. There will always be a place in my heart for Stephen Gately, and when I grow old & grey, my memories of Stephen Gately will keep me smiling. I know this love's forever and that's all that matters, no matter what.

Anna Sui dresses Gossip Girl

Today is turning out to be Fashion Friday on my blog. Makes me want to do a round of shopping over at ModCloth and I'm still hunting down a gold disc necklace that I saw on Weeds and I'm completely in love with it!

If you're an Anna Sui and Gossip Girl fan, this is likely your pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. From September 13 through October, you'll be able to buy to your heart's content the Anna Sui Collection for Target, inspired by Gossip Girl characters Blair, Serena, Vanessa and Lil' J. There are only 19 looks in the collection but lots of options to mix and match. If you must, the collection will be available at selected Target stores and Target.com.

I like Anna Sui's concept of the rock & rock doll-like girl with a dash of vintage, and I'm a big fan of the outfits from Gossip Girl but nothing is screaming "buy me" from the look book - but there are some really fun ideas to wear outfits that you'll probably already have in the wardrobe. And if you like fall colors, the collection's made for you - from warm autumn browns, dashes of blue hues and it won't be Anna Sui without a generous dose of black lace! I don't buy clothes from Target (it's not Target, it's just that the last time I shopped for clothes at departmental stores was when Mum had to take me shopping) but if I had to pick one to wear, it'll probably blue & yellow flower brown print dress.

Check out some of the Gossip Girl girls at Anna Sui for Target launch party. Hmm, Emma Stone (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The House Bunny) may need to have a heart-to-heart with her stylist - she's bound to appear on the Who Wore It Better List. Sigh.

Here's a peek into the Gossip Girl-inspire Anna Sui for Target collection, for more, head over to The Cut or Nitrolicious.

American Idol: Ellen DeGeneres replaces Paula Abdul!

It's official! Paula Abdul has been replaced! According to Variety, Ellen DeGeneres announced on her daytime talk show that she will join Simon, Randy and Kara as the fourth judge on American Idol. I guess after eight seasons, the producers finally realized that Paula was more effective as comedic fodder (bet you people took bets on how high she would be every night) than as a judge. I mean, has she ever given a negative criticism? I applaud her for her enthusiasm but woman, have an opinion!

So why pay Paula so people can laugh at her when you can have a sober crowd-pleaser like Ellen? That way, the audience are laughing with Ellen. Ellen's quirky and real but I think she'll need some time to ease into her new seat on the American Idol panel. Reading the news on Variety, it hit me - Ah, Ellen's appearance as guest judge on the last season's So You Think You Can Dance was an audition! To test the TV waters, to see Ellen could possibly bring in the ratings. Personally, I felt Ellen was way to easy on the dancers. So I'm hoping to see less rah-rah, more funny / tongue-in-cheek comments from Ellen on American Idol. Idol needs a Mary Murphy! I can't believe I'm saying this but Mary Murphy used to annoy the hell out of me every time she laughed/screamed but strangely, she grows on you!

Need a definition for no-talent? Speidi to the rescue!

Anderson Cooper on Heidi "Look-at-me" Montag's "performance" (word used extremely loosely) at the Miss Universe pageant. Heh. You know you're bad when people are asking you to work on your lip-syncing skills.

Chuck kisses Ellis! And Ellis is a guy!

Gasp. Gasp. By now, we all know that the new season of Gossip Girl starts Sept 14 but hold on to your seats, ladies...and boys! Spoilers ahead!

Good ol' Perez Hilton found a call sheet on the set of Gossip Girl which basically tells us that Chuck will kiss a new character, Josh Ellis, NYU’s head of freshman affairs. So the deal-eo is that Queen B wants something from Josh and she pimps her man out to Josh, who happens to be gay. Josh is played by Neal Bledsoe, a 28-year-old Canadian who's played minor roles in CSI: NY and Lipstick Jungle. Not my type, but at least there's Chuck - yums!

Side-tracking, speaking of yums, I love the way Hayden Panatierre says "yums" in I Love You, Beth Cooper. :)

And in other Gossip Girl news - new photos from episode 1 of season 3: Reversal of Fortunes! Yay!

Main photo above - Chuck looking dee-lish in a powder blue pin-stripe suit, perfectly complemented with Blair's romantic mint green dress, perfectly topped off with a raspberry ribbon. Did I say, YUMS!

Serena lip-locks Carter Baizen! Dum dum dum.

Nate spotted with Bree Buckley, played by Joanna Garcia - I'm with you, who?). Do we care? Nope, last time I checked - not interested in Nate.
